BUW48 Application Field and Working Principle
The BUW48 is a NPN Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) designed for operation in an array of general purpose applications. It is particularly created to withstand high voltage and current requirements, making it an ideal choice for audio amplification, power switching and complementary operation in general purpose applications.
When considering operation of the BUW48 for a particular application, it is important to understand the parameters that affect its performance. This includes the Collector-Base Voltage, also known as the breakdown voltage, which is the voltage at which the transistor enters breakdown. It is classified as the saturation region. The BUW48 has a Collector-Base breakdown voltage of 150V.
The Emitter-Base Voltage, or transition voltage, is the voltage at which the transistor passes from the active region to its cut-off region. It is usually determined by the base current of the transistor. The BUW48 transition voltage sits at 5V.
The maximum collector current of the BUW48 is 10A. This current should be limited in order to prevent damage to the transistor. The power dissipation is another important parameter of the BUW48, and it should not exceed the maximum rated power at any time. The maximum power dissipation at 25°C of the BUW48 is 4W.
The BUW48 transistor can be used for audio amplification, power switching or complementary operation in a number of applications. In audio amplification applications, the BUW48 is capable of increasing signal strength to achieve higher levels of output without suffering from noise or signal distortion. When used for power switching applications, the BUW48 can be used to control voltage and current to a desired level. This is enabled by the stability of the device, as it is able to maintain a more accurate flow of power while limiting the current and voltage. In complementary applications, the BUW48 transistor can be used in a pair to form a transistors amplifier, with the collector and emitter connections of the two transistors forming a complementary circuit.
To operate the BUW48 effectively, a basic understanding of its working principle is essential. NPN Bipolar Junction Transistors operate by allowing the flow of electrons from the emitter to the collector, when there is an ample amount of current at the base. This current at the base is established by a voltage supply placed across the base-emitter junction. When the voltage applied is sufficient to overcome the built-in potential barrier, the collector current is caused to flow. This current is known as the Beta current, or Beta, and it is the voltage supplied by the base that determines the amount of Beta current that will flow through the transistor. This is known as the transistor’s Gain, and its value is dependent on the size of the Beta current.
The common-collector configuration of the BUW48 allows for a maximum Beta current to flow through the transistor. This is beneficial in applications where current amplification is required, as it ensures that the transistor can produce the highest possible gain. The BUW48 makes a great choice for applications where high voltage and current requirements must be met, making it an ideal choice for audio amplification, power switching and complementary operation in general purpose applications.
