The Zener diode works in a manner that when the voltage is less than the breakdown voltage, it behaves like an ordinary diode and then blocks the current from flowing in the reverse direction. But when the voltage reaches a breakdown voltage, the current through it rises abruptly and can be controlled by the user, who can set the power rating limit on it. The excess current is then dissipated in the form of heat.
