The BZX585B7V5 RSG Standard Zener diodes are used in a variety of applications which include the control of voltage levels in computer overvoltage protection, automotive electronics voltage regulator, switching controllers, avionics power supply regulation, and in the control of current flow in power supplies such as dc-dc converters and switch mode power supplies (SMPS).Computer overvoltage protection applications can use the BZX585B7V5 RSG Standard Zener diodes to protect transistors, ICs, and other delicate components in the circuit by limiting the voltage to a safe operating level. In automotive electronics applications, these Zener diodes can be used in a variety of voltage regulator, switching controllers, and clippers to ensure that the voltage is held within safe levels. As in avionics power supply regulation, the BZX585B7V5 RSG Standard Zener diodes are used to limit maximum input voltage to the power supply to prevent overvoltage damage or failure. Furthermore, these diodes can be used in dc-dc converters and switching mode power supplies (SMPS) for controlling the current flow in the circuit.Working Principle
The BZX585B7V5 RSG Standard Zener diodes are designed to operate in reverse breakdown mode. This operating mode requires forward voltage to be applied to the diode before the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curve begins to bend or reverse.When the forward voltage is applied to the diode, electrons in the semiconductor material start to move and generate a charge-carrier (electron-hole) direction. This process further generates a field in reverse direction which increases the voltage. When the voltage reaches a certain value it forces the carriers to move in the opposite direction. A particular value of operating voltage known as “reverse breakdown voltage” is determined. Above this voltage value, the current shows an exponential increase which results in an avalanche breakdown of the semiconductor material.After breakdown is achieved, the Zener diode operates in the reverse-biased conduction region and maintains a voltage drop even in extreme load and temperature conditions. The breakdown voltage of BZX585B7V5 RSG Standard Zener diodes can be varied, depending upon the type and material used.Conclusion
