This “firing” of the SCR is still not strong enough to hold the current between the anode and the cathode. To turn on a much larger current flow, a small current needs to be sent to the gate terminal. This activates the device, and the current can flow freely between the anode and the cathode. Moreover, the firing angle of the C435M depends on the amount of current sent to the gate. By controlling the current sent to the gate, the C435M can be used to precisely regulate the current sent to an appliance.

When the SCR is activated, the anode and cathode terminals remain connected, and the current continues to flow until the gate current is discontinued, or a back-voltage is applied across the anode and the cathode. This back voltage, also known as the reverse blocking voltage, is the voltage level at which the device is turned off.
