Thyristors - SCRs

Thyristors are type of semiconductor devices that have three or more connecting terminals and can be used for controlling and switching of electrotechnical systems. One type of thyristor, the gate-controlled Thyristor (or SCR for short) is a rectifying device with four semiconductor layers whose function is to block the current flow in one direction and allow the current to pass in the opposite direction.

The C50BX500 is one type of SCR capable of handling 500 amperes of current at a maximum of 1700 volts. It is a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) with reverse recovery time and low turn-off time. This type of SCR is most often used in ac motor drives, high power switching applications, and industrial equipment.

The C50BX500 works by having the conduction of current blocked until the trigger voltage is applied which creates a gate-emitter junction. The trigger voltage must be more than the rating of the SCR, otherwise the device will not work. When the voltage is below the rating, the gate-emitter junction is blocked and the current flows in the opposite direction.

Once the overvoltage reaches the rating, the current starts to pass through the device enabling it to turn on or off automatically as per the control signals applied to its gate terminal. The gate-emitter junction of the SCR breaks the conduction immediately upon the gate current falling below a certain value, thus limiting its reverse power dissipation.
