Working Principle

C50EX500 is a bidirectional semiconductor switching device that turns a current on and off when it is triggered. It consists of four layers of alternating P-type and N-type material, with connections referred to as anode and cathode and an additional gate connection.

It works on the principle of the four layers or four junctions. The operation of the SCR typically starts with the gate terminal. A positive gate current is applied to the gate terminal of the SCR, which attracts majority carriers of holes and electrons to the gate region. This creates a junction between the gate and the anode which is similar to a normal PN Juction diode.

When the anode voltage increases, a forward biased PN junction between the anode and the cathode is established. This in turn current starts increasing and the SCR device conducts just like a normal diode between its anode and cathode. It remains in a conducting mode until the anode current drops below a certain value, which is the holding current.

The SCR switches off when the gate current falls below the cutoff value. This is the basic working of SCR device.
