Working Principles of C52BX500

Thyristors convert electric energy into useful form of power with the assistance of an electronic switch. C52BX500 is a SCR device composed of four layers of semiconductor material with p-n-p-n structure. The central n-type layer is known as the gate and it is used to control the on and off state of the device. When the gate is triggered by a positive voltage, electrons will move from the gate to the p-type layer on one side and holes will move from the gate to the p-type layer on the other side together creating an electric current which passes through the device. This is the operating state of the thyristor.

The off-state voltage rating of C52BX500 is 1,500V and the on-state current is 500A. The device has an anti-parallel diode for over-voltage protection and for returning the current of the circuit to the original direction. The device is triggered by a positive signal, also known as a control signal or gate signal. This signal is used to turn on the device and cause a current to flow from the cathode to anode and the voltage appears across the device. This is known as the forward current conduction state of the thyristor.

The device can also be turned off by cutting off the gate signal, or by reversing the voltage across the device. When the current is reversed, the device will be turned off and the current will be free to flow in the opposite direction due to the anti-parallel diode.
