The C8051F717-GMR is a fully-integrated system-on-chip (SoC) that combines all the components needed to create an embedded system for use in a variety of applications. It is a complete microcontroller, including a  processor, memory, peripherals, and other features, all integrated on a single chip. This integration allows for rapid development of embedded systems because all of the needed components are already on the chip, eliminating the need to design and build a circuit board to support the microcontroller. Specifically, the C8051F717-GMR is a member of the Mixed-Signal family of the Silicon Labs Fractional-N PLL clock synthesizers. It  features an 8051-compatible 8-bit microcontroller core, 9-bit ADC, 24 KB of program memory, 1 KB of data memory, a 16-bit timer, I2C™, SPI™, 2 UARTs, and an on-chip debug interface. 

The C8051F717-GMR is well-suited for applications that require a general-purpose microcontroller with mixed-signal differentiation.  In a typical application, it is used to control analog and digital IO, communicate with other devices, track time and date, or help connect with the internet. The C8051F717-GMR is also well-suited for Internet of Things (IoT) applications that require a low-power, fully-integrated microcontroller platform. The device features a low power mode that consumes only 4 µA when the processor is idle.

The C8051F717-GMR operates at frequencies up to 40 MHz and includes Flash Program-ERase (PE) memory to store application code. The PE memory also features a codeless debugging feature in which an external debugger is not needed in order to debug the code. This allows for rapid development and testing of applications without having to rely on external debugging hardware. The C8051F717-GMR also includes a voltage detector that monitors the supply voltage, allowing the application to dynamically adjust the system clocking speed in response to the system voltage. This feature helps to reduce power consumption and improve overall system performance.

The C8051F717-GMR is a versatile and flexible microcontroller that provides a wealth of features for designers building IoT embedded systems, general purpose microcontroller systems, data acquisition, and many other applications. The C8051F717-GMR utilizes an 8-bit microcontroller core, which features a four-stage pipeline architecture that allows it to operate at speeds up to 12 MHz. The C8051F717-GMR also features a 16-bit timer, which can be configured for periodic or one shot interrupts. The timer can also be configured for low power oscillator mode, which allows the device to operate at frequencies as low as 200 kHz.

The C8051F717-GMR also features a 9-bit A/D converter, which allows it to accurately measure analog input signals. The A/D converter can be configured for single or continuous conversion mode, which allows the system to take accurate measurements at specific times or continuously.

The C8051F717-GMR also features a high-speed inter-integrated circuit (I2C) interface, which allows it to communicate with other devices. The I2C interface supports data rates as high as 400 kbps, which provides enough bandwidth for most applications. In addition, the I2C interface supports multiple master and slave modes.
