The CAT6218-270TDGT3 is a low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. It belongs to the PMIC – voltage regulators – linear family. The CAT6218-270TDGT3 has three functions; low dropout linear voltage regulator, over-voltage protection and power management.The CAT6218-270TDGT3 provides good linear voltage regulation from 1.2V to 3.6V with an output current capability of up to 250mA. It is designed to be used in low voltage, low-power applications such as battery operated and portable electronic systems.The CAT6218-270TDGT3 application field includes; portable electronic device, battery powered devices, cell phone, laptop, and many other electronic products. The CAT6218-270TDGT3 can be widely used in battery-backed applications, such as microcontrollers, with its low dropout voltage (100 mV at 250 mA) and 10μA quiescent current.The CAT6218-270TDGT3 also has an overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit which provides reverse current protection in case of a short circuit. The OVP circuit automatically shuts down the IC at a preset level, thus preventing IC damage.The working principle of the CAT6218-270TDGT3 is simple and straightforward. The internal diode-connected transistor is activated to reduce the LO voltage read by the load, at the time when the device is enabled. A low-dropout voltage (VLO) control logic is used to set the output voltage level. An external resistor divider (or voltage reference) can be used to set the output voltage level. Internally, the output voltage accuracy is maintained by a FB comparator stage. The part also contains protection circuits to handle over-temperature and current overloads, as well as an EN pin to enable or disable the output.The CAT6218-270TDGT3 is suitable for applications where feature size, power supply performance and power field limitation are of concern. It is widely used in low voltage and low power applications and in battery-backed systems.
