The CD4010CN is a series of integrated circuits that are part of the Logic - Buffers, Drivers, Receivers, Transceivers family. This chip is primarily used as a single output buffer/driver and is equally suited for datasheet applications requiring digital inputs. It provides a two-level logic range at the output that allows for improved noise margin, better switching characteristics, increased data rate and faster response time. In addition to its robust design, the CD4010CN offers static and dynamic operation.
The CD4010CN is basically a single output buffer/driver capable of driving large capacitive loads. It is designed to interface digital circuits with analog systems, thereby providing an effective bridge between the two realms. What makes it unique is that it can operate on +5V and +3V power supplies, enabling applications to benefit from the enhanced noise margins provided by this logic family. Furthermore, this logic family can handle a logic input below VCC, meaning that it can be used to interface with TTL logic. Some variants of this logic family can also be used with CMOS logic, too.
Without going into too much detail of the device packaging, its pin diagram is shown in Figure 1. This device is an 8-to-1 multiplexer and its output is the select input pin D (pin 5). The device has four inputs A (pin 1), B (pin 2), C (pin 3), and D (pin 4) and the outputs OE (pin 6) and Y (pin 7). This device operates from a power supply voltage between 3V and 5V and can source or sink up to 8m A at the output.

The CD4010CN device has three distinct operating modes – static, dynamic and active. When operating in static mode, the device outputs a logic level that is independent of the input signals. The output level is determined by the state of the select input or the state of the output enable pin. On the other hand, when operating in dynamic mode, the device output is driven by the input waveform and can provide zero propagation delay (assuming the device terminates the waveform at saturation conditions). In active mode, this device can be operated to drive high capacitive loads at frequencies up to 500 kHz resulting in excellent rise and fall time characteristics.
At the heart of the CD4010CN is a relay-type logic element, which is constituted by the three transistors and the resistor. This relay-type logic element will constantly copy the input, A (pin 1), to the output, Y (pin 7). The output enable (OE, pin 6) and the select input (D, pin 5), are used to modify the output in the following manner (refer to Figure 2).

When the output enable (OE) pin is high, the output is high regardless of the state of the select input. Similarly, when the output enable pin is low, the output will be low regardless of the value of the select input (i.e., it will ignore the select input). When the output enable pin is high and the select input is low, this device will output a low logic level. When the output enable pin (OE) is high and the select input is high, the output will be high. As mentioned before, this chip can operate in all three modes.
Application wise, the CD4010CN can be used for a number of applications. It can be used for digital data transfer applications such as I/O buffering, bus-level shifting, and bus-transceiver interfacing. It can also be used in analog applications as a multiplexer/demultiplexer, an amplifier, and a logic translator. Furthermore, the device is ideal for digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion applications, as it has the ability to match the characteristics of both analog and digital worlds.
