Logic - Shift Registers is one of the essential support technologies in many modern electronic systems. The CD4015BEG4 is a dual 4-bit parallel-in/serial-out shift register, designed to shift data in either direction to facilitate single bit, byte, or word movement. The device can be used in both serial input/serial output and bidirectional parallel input/serial output configurations. Its versatile architecture makes it the choice for a variety of applications.
The CD4015BEG4 is comprised of two 4-bit shift registers tied together in a master/slave configuration. The Master register is the device that initially loads the data from a parallel source and passes that data to the Slave register. The Slave register then takes the data from the Master and serializes it for output. The data is clocked when shifted between the Master and Slave registers and out to the serial output.
The CD4015BEG4 possesses the added feature of shift direction control (SDC). The SDC line makes it possible to change the direction in which data is shifted without having to reset the device and start over. The CD4015BEG4 operates under a 2-phase clock cycle, where the first phase focuses on data being inputted, and the second phase focuses on shifting. During the first phase, the data from an external source is inputted into the Master Register. The Master Register then calculates the logic levels of the data and passes it to the Slave Register. Once it has done this, the Master Register locks the newly calculated data and the Slave Register unlocks a bit from the Master Register. This is repeated until all data is passed from the Master to the Slave.
During the second phase, the data being shifted will be controlled by the Shift/Load (SL) and Direction Control (DC) lines. If the logic level on the SL line is high, the Slave Register will shift the data out one bit at a time; each successive logic level change of the SL line will cause the Slave Register to shift out the next bit. If the logic level of the DC line is high, the data will be shifted in the ‘down’ direction; if the logic level of the DC line is low, the data will be shifted in the ‘up’ direction.
