CD4015BM is a 4-bit synchronous programmable counter and it belongs to the group of the logic - shift registers. The device consists of four flip-flops sharing the same clock and synchronous reset, allowing the cascade connection for the counting applications. It also includes two complement outputs for a +4/-4 counting sequence.CD4015BM application fields are mainly associated with digital counters and shift registers. The device is used in applications where high-speed parallel-loading or clocking is needed due to its synchronous operation. Thus, all the outputs are updated at the same time, making the device suitable for applications like clocking and data input in microprocessor and microcontroller based systems, providing address decoding in memory systems, and many other logic circuitry applications.The CD4015BM working principle can be explained in a clearer way by looking at its detailed internal block diagram, which consists of four synchronous flip-flops and some other parallel-connection blocks. All the synchronous counters have a common CLK input in which the CLK signal controls all the four flip-flops, thus the output results are functioning in the same manner. The counter has two clock modes: Positive Edge-Triggered and Negative Edge-Triggered. In positive mode, the clock signal is required to move the counter\'s outputs ahead one count at each rising edge, while in the negative edge-triggered mode, the counter\'s output is incremented on every falling edge.In order to reset the counter as desired, it is also necessary to connect the reset (RST) signal to both the active-high reset and active-low reset pins of the device. The reset signal will then force the outputs to be logic 0, logical 1, or their last-known state prior to the reset, depending on the state of these reset input pins. The CD4015BM output chain can also be configured in different ways according to the user’s requirement. There are two outputs, QA and QB, for a +4/-4 counting sequence that can be used to cascade two or more CD4015BM devices for the larger counting range. Each output is also connected to the complementary output of the next stage, allowing connection of the cascaded devices to respond to the same clock and reset signals.The other function of the CD4015BM incorporated in this device is the Interchangeable Single Input Changing. In this operation, what is needed to be done is monitoring two or three inputs and immediately swap the state of two different outputs when one of the inputs is detected. This operation can be useful for realizing data flow control, memory refresh functions, status checking, etc.Finally, the last block of the CD4015BM consists of two AND gates connected between Q3 and Q4 outputs and the QA,QB outputs. This provides the user with the means of setting an output to “1” regardless of the other outputs state, which has a wide range of applications.The exceptional features and functionality of the CD4015BM make it a popular choice for many logic circuitry applications.
