The CD40194BE is a 8 bits serial-in/serial-out shift register from the advanced clear logic family. This shift register has advanced clear logic internal logic gates and displays high speed low power operation with active-LOW outputs propelling the device towards prominence in its field.
The CD40194BE registers feature one serial data input (DS) , three control inputs (CP, CLR and PL) and eight serial data outputs (Q7 through Q0). As far as logic gate configuration is concerned, this register has two NAND gates with three inputs each , and two AND gates with two inputs each, suggesting that it is well suited for serial - in/serial-out applications. This 8-bits shift register is available in a 16-pin dual-in-line plastic package or in a 20 pin narrow body SOIC.
Application Field
The main application for the CD40194BE were systems that required the storage and shift of data such as data communications, computer system design and remote sensing applications. Working Principle
The shift register works by passing the digital value (bit) of the data input at each clock pulse according to the serial-in/serial-out configuration. An internal 3-state buffer, with the input and output loaded from external pins, active-LOW outputs and active-HIGH outputs are driven.
The clock control input (CP) controls the loading and shifting action; setting the clock to HIGH allows data on the data input (DS) pin to be loaded into the register and accepted by the internal register when the clock goes LOW. The input data (DS) is then shifted out of the register on the outputs each time CP goes HIGH. This process repeats until all 8 bits have been shifted out of the register.
The clear input (CLR) sets all of the output pins (Q7-Q0) to the logic HIGH stage when active-LOW. The parallel load input pin (PL) is used to parallel load the data from the parallel outputs to corresponding registers. The parallel load pin also has an active LOW control.
As can be seen, the CD40194BE shift register displays an impressive level of versatility, making it an ideal choice for many types of serial-in/serial-out applications.
