The CD4021BM96 is a member of the 4000-series dual 4-stage parallel- and serial-in shift registers logic family. It is a monolithic integrated circuit featuring two separate 4-stage registers which are controlled by dedicated programmable logic controller (PLC) terminals and provides a serial-in/parallel-out data shifting capability.The CD4021BM96 is primarily intended for use in applications requiring data movement and storage control with or without address manipulation, such as in data bus applications, memory address decoding and data serializing/deserializing applications. In addition, the CD4021BM96 is a shift register capable of performing a wide range of functions, such as binary counting, setting, testing and resetting data information, and serial data transmission. The CD4021BM96 contains two 4-stage serial-in/parallel-out shift registers which are accessed by a dedicated logic controller. and the two independent 4-stage shift registers are interchangeable so that either can be used as the control or output register. One is designated "MSR" which stands for Master Shift Register, and the other is designated "ASR" which stands for Auxiliary Shift Register. Each register contains four cascade stages with provisions for parallel loading as well as serial loading and/or output. The CD4021BM96 provides an efficient data movement method whereby data can be shifted serially through four stages of the shift register at rapid speeds. Serial-in/parallel-out (SIPO) or parallel-in/serial-out (PISO) data flow can be accomplished with the CD4021BM96. Shift register data movements may be controlled independent of internal programmable logic controller activity The basic operation of the CD4021BM96 is as follows: first, each stage of the shift register is loaded with the appropriate data bits, after which the data is shifted to left or right. When the data reaches the fourth stage, the data is either outputted in parallel or recirculated. The direction of shifting is determined by the S/R (shift/recirculate) control input. The CD4021BM96 is particularly suited for applications requiring high speed serial data transfer. The IC has an input data rate of up to 1Mbits/sec and an output data rate of up to 50Mbits/sec. The CD4021BM96 is used in many electronic applications such as test systems, printers, modems, and instrumentation systems that require data transmission and/or data storage. In addition, the CD4021BM96 is employed in a wide range of applications in the industrial, medical, and communications sectors.
