The working principle of the CD4076BM96 is based on voltage level shifting. The two sets of logic levels (A and B) are connected in series between VSS to VDD. The core functionality of the device is realized by using the following components: the output flip-flop, the refill operation, the preset operation, the reset operation and the clock/enable operation. In terms of additional features, the CD4076BM96 offers a variety of such systems as self-timed DC-DC converter, oscillator, and burst mode operation.
The output flip-flop consists of two cross-coupled pairs of inverters working simultaneously. When this Flip-Flop is enabled and driven with an external clock signal, the output state is determined depending on the state of the inputs. The refill, preset and reset operations are triggered when specific conditions at the inputs meet the operating criteria. The refill mode is when the R and Q inputs are both in the same state (either ‘1’ or ‘0’). Upon occurrence of this condition the output of the other state is triggered. The preset and reset operations are complementary, and in the preset mode the device sets the output to the ‘1’ state, while in the reset mode it sets the output to the ‘0’ state.
The clock/enable operation determines the time window in which the outputs are changed. The higher the clock speed is, the shorter the time window will be. The system is enabled by the trigger signal arriving at the enable input.
In its applications, the CD4076BM96 Logic-Flip-Flop can be used to manage synchronization and timing in such systems as distributed data systems, clock recovery systems and multiplexers/demultiplexers. As it is designed to work with a wide range of power supplies from ±4.5V to ±18V, it can be integrated into various devices.
