The CD74FCT245M96 is a high-speed, high–performance, low–power, BiCMOS device that provides bidirectional transceiving of data in a variety of systems. This device performs the function of an 8–bit buffer/line driver or an 8–bit transceiver which is ideal for asynchronous communication systems between data buses and helps reduce EMI and RFI from bus–oriented designs. Its performance and small footprint make the CD74FCT245M96 especially suitable for low–voltage applications. It has three output state options, High–Z, Tri–state and standard output.

Working Principle
The CD74FCT245M96 contains transceivers with tri–state outputs that enable bidirectional data transmission. This device contains 8 bits of non–inverting tristate buffers, which enable data transmission from one bus to the other. The transfer of data takes place when level–sensitive logic signals are delivered on input pins. Data is transmitted when the input signal bytes are driven active (High or Low) and concurrently, the other set of bytes are enabled by pulling their enable line high. The device provides an enable signal that is used to control the operation of the transceivers. This signal is used to enable the transmission of data when it is driven high, and disable the transmission of data when it is driven low. The enable pin is tied to the A side of the bus and the B side of the bus is tied to the tri–state buffer. When both buses are in a high–Z (or tri–state) state, data transfer can take place in either direction.
The CD74FCT245M96 also enables data to be transmitted in both directions simultaneously. When both enable pins are high, data can be transferred in both directions at the same time. This enables two independent channels of two–way data transfer; one between the A and B buses, and one between the Y and Z buses. Data flow in the opposite direction on each bus can be controlled by enabling and disabling the appropriate output buffer.
The CD74FCT245M96 can also be used as a logic level shifter. This can be achieved by using two identical transceivers, one for each voltage level. When one of the transceivers is powered by a 5V or 3V supply, the other will also be powered accordingly. The transceiver powering the higher voltage level will drive the low voltage level output, providing a logic level shift from +5V to +3V or from +3V to +5V. The device is also capable of signaling between different voltages due to the fact that the input and output pins are separate.
This device is also ideal for providing bidirectional communication between two systems that operate at different data transfer speeds. The input and output pins can be connected to the slower system and the appropriate enable pin can be used to drive the higher speed system. This feature enables the faster system to take over the bus and transfer data while the bus is in the high–Z state.
