CD74HCT85M is a high-performance four-bit magnitude comparator integrated circuit with internal hysteresis. It is a member of the HCT family, which means that all 12 of the TTL inputs accept CMOS level signals, which makes the IC usable in a variety of different applications. This particular device can compare two 4-bit binary words and determine the relative magnitudes of them, outputting either a binary “0001” for A greater than B, a binary “0010” for A equal to B, or a binary “0100” for A less than B.
CD74HCT85M has quite a few useful applications. It can be used to reduce timing errors in data buses, to select the minimum or maximum of two input signals, to compare two digital voltages, or to detect signals that differ by two or more bits. It can also be used to resolve multiplexed address and data buses, or to compare two words that share a common MSB.

It has a low power dissipation of typically 1.4 mW and a very low propagation delay of 8 ns, 8.5 ns, and 8.5ns at 4.5V, 5V, and 10V, respectively. Structurally we find that CD74HCT85M consists of eight high-speed Schottky-clamped NAND gates, four high-impedance bus transceivers, and one hysteresis circuit. The NAND gates are the building block for the four-bit buffers, which are responsible for accepting the inputs. There are two 4-bit channels, input A and input B, and their binary code is compared in real time.
The procedure followed by the comparator is quite straightforward. First, the inputs are “latched”, or in other words, signal information is passed to the internal logic circuit. Then, after a comparison, the outputs (one for each of the input channels) are determined. To guarantee correct comparison between the two inputs, there is a hysteresis circuit. This is particularly useful when the I/O pins on the device are susceptible to noise.
In conclusion, CD74HCT85M is a highly versatile IC, ideal for determining the magnitude of two 4-bit binary words. It combines many of the same features found on other HCT ICs, such as low power dissipation, short propagation delay, and high tolerance to supply voltage variations.
