CDBA140L-G Application Field and Working Principle

CDBA140L-G is a kind of diode, also termed as “double-diffused” (Schottky barrier) diode, which belongs to the category of rectifiers. It is designed for use in low-power high-frequency switching applications and features a glass packaged planar device, with a low forward voltage drop. Its all-glass module package offers excellent thermal conductivity, making it ideal for a variety of applications, such as signal line isolation, signal regeneration, signal filtering, and switching.

The working principle of CDBA140L-G is based on the operation of a diode, generally also termed as junction diode, in which the current conduction can take place in a single direction only and the device opposition to reverse conduction is termed as its rectifying behavior. The capacitance of the element and junction voltage play an important role in its operation.

A standard CDBA140L-G rectifier is composed of two p-type semiconductor layers and an n-type semiconductor layer which serve as the diode\'s two electrodes, called anode and cathode respectively. When the diode is approached with a forward bias voltage, i.e. the anode being more positively charged than the cathode, the depletion layer shrinks and current begins to flow that changes the device\'s junction voltage. Due to the built-in voltage in the diode, a depletion layer is formed in between the anode and cathode which resists the flow of current from cathode to anode. Thus, the current conduction through a diode is uni-directional.

The most common application of a rectifier diode is for converting AC power to DC power, a process aptly termed as rectification. In rectification, the diode is connected in an ac circuit with its anode towards the negative ac cycle and can form a half-wave rectifier, a full-wave bridge rectifier or a full-wave center-tapped rectifier. The pulse-width modulation converter is another technique used in the rectification application. Various rectifier diodes, including the CDBA140L-G, also find use in power electronics circuits in the form of clipping and clamping circuits, voltage multipliers, voltage regulators and current limiters.
