Principle of Operation

Like all other rectifiers, the CDBU0330-HF is also a diode which lets current pass through in only one direction. This phenomenon is known as unidirectional conductivity. It occurs as a consequence of the structure of the CDBU0330-HF; the N-type material passes electrons to the P-type material below it. This gives rise to an "N" shaped structure when looked at from the side with the N-material at the top and the P-material below. When a positive voltage is applied across the junction (from the N-type material) the electrons flow from the N-type to the P-type material and current starts flowing from the cathode to the anode. This is the forward bias and it can sustain a current up to 33 amps for this particular rectifier for a specific period of time.

When the voltage polarity is reversed, the current flow is blocked due to the repulsive forces exerted by the electrons in the two regions. This phenomenon is known as reverse bias and its characteristics are used in various applications as mentioned above. Under a reverse voltage, only a small current of 10 µA can cross the barrier and this characterises the diode as having a low reverse leakage.

The unidirectional function of the CDBU0330-HF is used in rectifying alternating currents by allowing only the positive half-cycles to pass and blocking the negative half-cycles.
