The working principle of the CDC5806PW follows the general principles of a PLL-type clock generator. This involves a reference clock and an output frequency, which can be controlled by adjusting either one of these signals with the help of a Phase-Frequency Detector (PFD) and a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO).When the reference clock and the output frequency are the same, the two signals will be in-phase, which is referred to as a locked state. If, for some reason, the reference and output frequencies diverge, the PFD will detect the difference in frequency and send the corresponding signal to the VCO to adjust the output frequency. With the PFD sending information to the VCO, the output frequency can be adjusted to match the reference clock.
