A Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) Arrester is a type of electrical protector that provides lightning and surge protection and acts as an early warning indicator to assist in the protection of electronic circuit boards such as those found in industrial and commercial applications. GDT Arresters are used to protect users and equipment from both direct and indirect lightning strikes.

A Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) Arrester is a two-terminal device consisting of three main components, namely, a gas-filled tube, a spark gap, and a spark gap discharge resistor. The Active Electrode is the spark gap, which is filled with a compatible dielectric gas with an initial partial pressure and the reference electrode is the external resistor, which is connected to ground. The active electrode is a spark gap filled with a non-flammable gas, such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Under normal conditions, the gap is filled with the specified gas, allowing current to pass through the tube and the external resistor without problem. However, when a voltage surge originating from lightning strikes occurs, the air between the terminals is ionized and an electrical discharge forms inside the tube, creating a spark. This spark diverts the dangerous surge of current away from the equipment and redirects it to the ground through the external resistor.

It then acts as a spark gap in conjunction with the MOV, ensuring efficient protection against overvoltages. Following a surge, the GDT completely air-gaps and the MOV recovers, thus restoring protection. The combined function of the CG2800L provides optimum protection against lightning related transients.
