Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) provides surge protection of communications, distribution and instrumentation power systems, as well as AC and DC control systems. One of them is CG31.5. CG31.5 application field includes indoor type surge protector for 36.7-500kV AC power system protective device. It offers a variety of sub-model surge arresters to meet different working conditions.

CG31.5 has a unique design and can be widely used in indoor distribution, power supply, telecommunications, electric power, instrumentation signal and power data transmission protection systems. The working principle of CG31.5 is based on the nonlinear resistance characteristic of the metal oxide elements, also known as Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs). MOVs are semiconductor devices with a highly nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. When voltage across the MOV exceeds a certain value, it provides overvoltage protection.

MOVs can be connected to low voltage and low currents via a series of resistors in parallel to a gas filled tube. If a voltage spike or overvoltage occurs, electrical current will flow through the MOVs and the resistors, allowing the voltage to increase. This reaction limits the voltage and prevents the waveform from entering the load.

A GDT is composed of a low-pressure noble gas (argon etc.), metal oxide components, a lead acid capacitor, an arc suppressor, and other components. The gas filled tube is connected in series with the MOVs. When an overvoltage surge occurs, the arc suppressor will react and create a rapid energy release in the gas filled tube. This energy release will act on the MOVs and cause the voltage across the MOVs to be limited, thus providing overvoltage protection.

These metal oxide components work in synchrony with the low-pressure noble gas in the tube to produce a very low resistance, which limits the voltage across it. The lead acid capacitor also helps to absorb some of the energy and to dampen the voltage spikes caused by the MOVs. The arc suppressor helps to reduce the current peaks from the MOVs in order to limit the voltage and reduce the arcing inside the GDT.
