Gas Discharge Tube Arresters, also reported to as GDTs, are lightweight electrical surge protectors which are designed to essentially protect sensitive components or structures from delicate electrical signals from very high voltage applications. The behavior of GDTs–or classifying them into Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) Arresters–is widely known and easy to implement across a wide variety of applications. The GDT Arresters are highly attractive because of their compact size, as well as their economical installation process.

A common example of a GDT in action is the CG33.3L arrester. This arrester is primarily used in the protection of outdoor, isolated circuits from direct surges in lightning. It is also noted for its excellent temperature stability and high reliability. The CG33.3L arrester also serves as an excellent protection element in the more volatile high voltage applications, such as those within the telecommunications industry, especially when high-frequency surges are of concern.

The components of the CG33.3L arrester are essentially layers made of composite material which have an insulating medium (usually air) in between them. These layers are the cathode and the anode, and when connected in series, they form an ‘arc’, also known as an ‘arc gap’, which is responsible for the discharging of the surge voltage. In the case of the CG33.3L arrester, this arc gap is designed to provide reliable over-voltage protection up to 33kV.

The operation of the CG33.3L arrester is quite simple and involves three distinct stages. When a surge occurs, the current flows through the anode, passes through the insulation layer (or arc gap) to the cathode, and is then discharged to ground through the earth electrode mounted underneath the arrester. At the same time, a small portion of the current is also being store in the capacitor located within the arrester. This stored current helps to disperse the energy generated by the surge, thereby limiting its magnitude.

The applications of CG33.3L arrester vary, however, the most common and essential uses include; outdoor electric circuits, communications and data lines, near substations, grounding systems, and lightning protection. Due to its excellent performance in limiting surge voltages, the CG33.3L arrester is suitable for applications where the voltage will remain below 33kV. It is also suitable in systems with high-frequency transient protection requirements due to its capacitor storage.

The CG33.3L arrester is one of the lightweight yet highly reliable and long-lasting GDTs available within the industry. Its simple yet efficient design makes it a suitable choice for protection of low-voltage systems requiring high surge protection. This arrester is extremely cost-effective and can be easily integrated into any power system, whether it be a residential or commercial property.
