Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are a form of surge protection device. They are used to protect sensitive components in a wide variety of electronic and electrical systems, such as sensitive medical equipment, communication equipment, industrial and process control systems, and consumer electronics. The CG7150MS employs a gas-filled, low breakdown voltage device as its main element. The main element is a sealed enclosure containing an inert gas at a low pressure and a metal-to-metal arrester element. The arrester element consists of two parallel metallic plates which are separated by insulating material. At normal operation, the applied voltage between the metal plates results in current moving from one plate to the other, creating an electric arc. If a transient voltage occurs, the gas ionizes, reducing the return current, thus limiting the energy transferred to the protected equipment.
The CG7150MS includes two terminal blocks, one for the primary power input and the other for the protected equipment. The device has built-in overvoltage protection, which is activated when the overvoltage exceeds the rated working voltage. This trips the arrester, de-energizing the protected equipment. In addition, the device is equipped with a re-triggerable device which allows for repeated surge protection cycles. The device also features a maintenance indicator that tells when the device needs to be replaced.
