Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are an important part of the electrical power system. They are designed to protect circuits, equipment and personnel from the damaging effects of surges in the electrical power grid. GDTs are relatively small and can be installed about anywhere in the power distribution system. One type of GDTs are the CG75MSTR application field and working principle.
The CG75MSTR is a dual terminal single stage lightning arrestor designed for use in low voltage power distribution circuits. The arrestor is designed with a zinc oxide nonlinear resistor element (NRE) that will respond to transient over voltages by providing a low resistance path for current to flow from the arrester electrodes to ground. This helps protect power system equipment from lightning and other overvoltage events. The arrester consists of an anode, a cathode and a zinc oxide nonlinear resistor (NRE) element. It is designed to clamp the transient voltage and divert the associated current to a safe level. The NRE element can absorb energy and clamp the voltage to the rated voltage level of the GDT.
The CG75MSTR is designed to operate in three stages: peak current stage, critica voltage stage and safe voltage stage. During the peak current stage, when a high peak current is encountered, the NRE element allows current to flow from the arrester electrodes to ground. This results in a voltage clamping effect and reduces the voltage to a safe level. During the critical voltage stage, the NRE element begins to saturate and the voltage across the electrodes increases. Finally, during the safe voltage stage, the arrester will hold the voltage at the rated voltage level of the GDT.
The CG75MSTR is used in commercial and industrial applications. Applications include utility, residential and light commercial power distribution, relay control and telecommunication systems, photovoltaic systems and industrial applications. It is designed to provide DC spark-over protection in power systems or telecommunications equipment. It is suitable for use in circuits up to 600VAC and the NRE element can support up to 2Ka peak current. The GDT also includes integrated surge protection features that protect against quick transients and over voltages.
