Humidity, Moisture Sensors: CHS-UGS application field and working principle

Introduction

Capacitance humidity and moisture sensors (CHS-UGS) are widely used in industrial, agriculture and horticulture fields for state sensing and data monitoring. It is accurate, low cost and energy-efficient with a simple working principle.

Application Field

CHS-UGS is mainly used to measure soil humidity and soil moisture content, including in horticultural farming, greenhouses, and grain storage

Working Principle

The working principle of CHS-UGS is based on the change of capacitance between two electrodes. A sensor board is placed between two electrodes and then connected to an Read Unit for measurement. The sensor board is composed of grid, ceramic material and electrolyte. Applying an electric voltage, the frequency of the electric field that penetrates the electrolyte will alter depending on the humidity/temperature. Then this frequency is measured by the Read Unit and converted to a humidity/temperature value.

The capacitance between two electrodes strongly depends on the water content inside the material of the sensor. When moisture increases, the conductivity increases and the frequency of the electric field passing through the electrolyte will decrease, resulting in a lower capacitance measurement. To measure soil moisture, pastes the sensor into the soil and collect data from the Read Unit.
