The CJ4308-000 chip is a single-chip NiMH/NiCd battery charger/capacity indicator. It is mainly used in digital products and low-power household appliances, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, shavers, toothbrushes, screwdrivers and flashlights. It is an ideal choice for applications where capacity indication, charge time indication, and charge protection are needed for NiMH/NiCd batteries.

The CJ4308-000 chip supports battery packs which have one to eight NiMH/NICd cells and with a capacity range from 2Ah to 24 Ah. It is available in both 8-pin and 10-pin packages and has an internal voltage regulator with adjustable output voltage range from 4.2V to 4.3V for single cell applications and from 8.4V to 8.6V for two cell applications.

The CJ4308-000 chip is built with an internal EEPROM and a microcontroller that allows it to measure and record multiple parameters such as voltage, temperature and time over the battery’s life. It also has the capability to monitor and control the charging process, ensuring safe operation and charging. It has an operating temperature range of -20 to 70 degrees Celsius, and is easy to implement in an embedded system or a stand-alone charger.

The working principle of the CJ4308-000 chip is as follows: When it is connected to a power source, it performs a precharge step to determine the cell number and their capabilities, then it performs a charge/dischargestep to measure the battery’s characteristics. During this step, the chip monitors the voltage and temperature of the battery cells, determines the charge or discharge status, and charges or discharges the cells accordingly. It also manages the time period for the charge/discharge cycle.

Once the charge/discharge cycle is completed, the chip switches to a capacity estimation step. During this step, the chip calculates the amount of charge that has been transferred to the battery and displays the estimated capacity on an LED display. It then enters a capacity monitoring step where it calculates the amount of power remaining in the battery. If the charge is depleted below a certain level, the chip will enter into a low-battery-detection mode which disables the battery to prevent over-discharging. It will switch off the connection to the battery and turn off the LED display when it is in this mode.

Finally, the CJ4308-000 chip can be connected to an external device such as a controller or a telephone chip for capacity estimation, control, and low battery detection. It is a simple and cost-effective solution for NiMH/NiCd battery charger applications.
