CMPZ5226B TR Application Field and Working Principle

The diode is made up of two terminals, an anode and a cathode. When the voltage across the diode is less than the rated reverse breakdown voltage of 5V, no current will flow through the diode. However, when the voltage across the diode is greater than the rated reverse breakdown voltage, the diode will conduct current in the reverse direction (ie across the anode and cathode) with the current being limited by the Zener effect.

The Zener effect causes the diode to maintain a constant voltage at the terminals, due to a phenomenon known as the avalanche breakover. This occurs when the electric field across the semiconductor junction is so strong that the electrons and holes are driven through the semiconductor junction. This causes an abrupt rise in current and an abrupt decrease in voltage, creating the breakdown effect required to make the diode conduct.

Once the diode is conducting, the voltage across the diode will remain at a constant value set by the Zener effect. This value will decrease as the current increases, however it will not drop below the Zener voltage. Therefore, the CMPZ5226B TR diode can be used to prevent a voltage from dropping below a specific threshold without having to use a voltage regulator.
