This causes an abrupt rise in current and an abrupt decrease in voltage, creating the breakdown effect required to make the diode conduct.
Once the diode is conducting, the voltage across the diode will remain at a constant value set by the Zener effect. This value will decrease as the current increases, however it will not drop below the Zener voltage. Therefore, the CMPZ5226B TR diode can be used to prevent a voltage from dropping below a specific threshold without having to use a voltage regulator.
