Optoisolators are optoelectronic devices which provide electrical isolation between input and output circuits, protecting sensitive control circuits from high voltage, inductive spikes, and transients in a production or laboratory environment. One of the most popular of these is the CNW82 transistor/photovoltaic output optoisolator, designed primarily for use as a high-voltage or low-power analog interface.
At the heart of the CNW82 optoisolator is a monolithic heart, a semi-insulating substrate with two layers of active circuit layers. The first layer consists of a light source, usually an LED, surrounded by an N-channel FET, while the second layer contains the photovoltaic diode, along with a reverse-biased valence shell for ESD protection.
