TVS - Diodes

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are often used to protect sensitive electronic components from high-energy voltage transients such as electrical spikes or overvoltage. The CPDFR5V0H-HF is a unidirectional TVS diode specifically designed to protect low-voltage digital circuits from large voltage disturbances.

Application Field

CPDFR5V0H-HF TVS diodes are ideal for high-speed data ports and sophisticated communication systems. They are often used in Cat5e and Cat6 LAN systems as well as in other data line applications, including USB, Firewire, and HDMI. CPDFR5V0H-HF diodes are also suitable for protecting automotive control circuits, magnetic and optical disc drives, and embedded controllers.

Working Principle

The CPDFR5V0H-HF is composed of two terminals, an anode and a cathode. It is designed to clamp voltages entering the circuit by rapidly conducting the current. When used properly, it can reduce the ultra-high voltage transients to a safe lowered level - often referred to as “clamping”. Clamping voltage is the maximum voltage on the protected device and should be choosen with care for optimal protection.

The typical protection mechanism of a CPDFR5V0H-HF diode is based on peak-pulse power dissipation. When the incoming voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, it starts conducting current and dissipates power in the form of heat. This heat is dissipated away from the protected component which is thus not damaged due to the voltage spike.
