Working Principle

SCRs have three layers of alternating n- and p-type dopant material. The two junctions (J1 and J2) between the p and n layers are the internal switching elements. The PNPN diode can be seen as two back to back diodes (J1 and J2) with a controlling gate or switch in the middle.

When the gate is open, no current can flow between the anode and cathode of the thyristor, because no electric field can form. This is known as the “off-state”. When a voltage is applied to the gate and positive with respect to the cathode, an electric field is established over the gate-cathode, and some current begins to flow through the thyristor, thus the thyristor is said to be in the “on-state”.

Once the CR2AS-16A-T13#B00 is in the “on-state”, the current will increase exponentially, until it reaches its “on-state” current at which point the conduction will stay steady and constant. This “on-state” conduction is known as Forward Current. When the forward current drops below a certain level, the thyristor will rapidly turn “off” and the current will drop to zero. This is known as reactive current and is the amount of current needed to ensure a smooth transition between on and off states.

Due to its ability to withstand high forward current, the CR2AS-16A-T13#B00 thyristor is suitable for many applications including AC switching, motor control, phase control, rectification, and semiconductor lighting.
