Thyristors - SCRs
A thyristor or a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is a three-terminal electronic component with a stable on/off state, which can be used as a switch or an oscillator. It is a semiconductor device with a ‘control’ terminal, a ‘gate’ terminal, and an ‘anode’ or ‘cathode’ terminal. Thyristors are widely used in a variety of applications, including power controls, motor control, temperature and light control, switching, logic gating, and data conversion. The most common types of SCRs are the two-gate and three-gate types.
The CR3AS-8B#B00 is a two-gate SCR designed for use in thyristor circuits. It features a negative-temperature-coefficient (NTC) thermistor, which helps protect the SCR from transient overvoltages, reverse currents, and electrostatic discharges. The SCR also includes a built-in voltage detector and short-circuit protection. The SCR is rated for a maximum of 400V DC, and an operating temperature range of -40 to +150°C.
Application Field
The CR3AS-8B#B00 can be used in a number of different applications, including motor control, high-voltage switching, solenoid control, and AC line voltage control. It is typically used in high-power applications, such as motor drives, AC switches, and high-voltage rectifiers. It is also used in PWM controllers and in lighting and security systems.
The CR3AS-8B#B00 is a popular choice for use in high-power switching applications due to its excellent resistance to transient voltage surges and its low on-state voltage drop. This makes it ideal for use in a variety of high-power applications, such as drive control applications, welding power supplies, welding transformers, and lighting systems.
Working Principle
Thyristors are triggered by a small voltage or current applied to their gate terminal. This sends a signal down the SCR’s control path, and causes it to switch on or “latch”. Once latched, the SCR remains on until the current or voltage is removed from its Gate terminal, or until the anode reaches its threshold voltage and turns off. This process is known as “commutation”.
The CR3AS-8B#B00 features a two-gate configuration, which makes it well suited for use in thyristor circuits operated in inverse parallel mode. In this mode, the SCR is triggered by a single pulse applied to its Gate terminal, and remains on until the signal is removed. This makes it ideal for use in applications where a constant signal is needed, such as lighting circuits.
The CR3AS-8B#B00 also includes a built-in voltage detector, which helps protect the SCR from reverse currents and electrostatic discharges. The thermal shut-down feature helps protect the device from thermal overloading, and the NTC thermistor helps reduce EMI emissions from the SCR. The built-in protection features make the CR3AS-8B#B00 ideal for use in a variety of high-power applications.
