Evaluation Boards - LED Drivers: CRD1630-9W-Z Application Field and Working PrincipleLight-emitting diode (LED) technology has seen a phenomenal growth in its application field in the past few years. It has become one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient lighting solutions for both commercial and residential applications. In order to make the selection process easier for engineers, manufacturers have come up with evaluation boards (EBs) such as the CRD1630-9W-Z. This evaluation board provides a platform for engineers to design and develop LED lighting products under both real-time and laboratory conditions. The following sections discuss the application field and working principle of the CRD1630-9W-Z evaluation board.Application FieldThe CRD1630-9W-Z evaluation board is specifically designed to drive LED lights. It operates at 9 watts and can be used to drive LEDs up to a maximum of 6 watts. It is ideal for applications such as LED spotlights, LED accent lighting, LED floodlights, LED street lights and LED downlights which require a higher wattage. The operating voltage of the board ranges from 12V to 20V, making it suitable for both residential and commercial applications. It is also compatible with a wide variety of LED light control systems and dimmers, enabling it to be used for a variety of commercial and industrial applications. In addition, the board is compatible with a variety of LED driver ICs, including the LTC3791 and LTC3792 from Linear Technologies.Working PrincipleThe CRD1630-9W-Z evaluation board operates on the principle of constant current regulation. The board uses a dedicated current controller IC, the LTC3791/LTC3792 to regulate the current and voltage of the LEDs. The LTC3791/LTC3792 are highly efficient switching controllers that can operate at frequencies up to 400kHz. The LTC3791/LTC3792 is powered by an external power supply and provides an adjustable current limit between 400mA and 900mA. The current can be further adjusted by setting the current sense resistor. Once the current limit is set, the output voltage is regulated to maintain the current level.The CRD1630-9W-Z evaluation board also includes over-temperature protection, pulse-by-pulse current limit, output voltage protection and open circuit protection. The board also includes short circuit and over-voltage protection and a dedicated Fault output pin. The board also includes an Under-voltage Lock-out (UVLO) feature to ensure that the controller does not start up if the input voltage is too low.
