Reed Relays
Reed relays are contact relays using a reed switch as their switching element. They offer several advantages such as cost savings, reliability, low power consumption, small size and light weight. Despite these features, reed relays can only handle relatively small control currents and low switching voltages.
The reed switch consists of two flat pieces of magnetically-sensitive material, called reeds, which are sealed between an evacuated glass envelope. The reeds may contain several contacts in an array, as partitions in the interior of the envelope separate the individual switch elements. One of the reeds is inwardly bent, and is called the armature, while the other is flat. The reeds are connected with the circuit in an array such that, when one reed moves, the other three stay stationary.
The reed switch is activated when an external magnetic field is applied. This causes the armature to move, which in turn closes the contacts on the other reed. Depending on the type of change in magnetic field, either an "on" or "off" state can be created. This process is known as the Reed-Solomon effect.
CRR05-1AS application field and working principle
CRR05-1AS reed relays are a popular choice for applications in the medical, automotive, commercial and industrial sectors. This type of relay offers robust performance, high reliability and operation in rigorous environments. The CRR05-1AS is a 4-pin SMD relay with a 1A switching power rating.
The CRR05-1AS relay uses a sealed, high-quality reed switch as its switching element. The reed switch is connected to the circuit via a solderable gold/ nickel-plated copper alloy contact. The relay offers high contact resistance, low operating current and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The reed switch is designed to be highly reliable in operation, with an expected life of over 10 million operations.
When a positive voltage is applied, the armature of the reed switch is attracted to the contact of the reed switch, closing the circuit. This closes the relay contacts, allowing the current to flow. When the voltage is removed, the armature is released, which in turn opens the relay contacts, preventing the flow of current. This process is known as energizing or de-energizing the relay.
Thanks to its high reliability, low power consumption, superior performance and compact size, the CRR05-1AS reed relay is an excellent choice for a variety of applications. Its wide operating temperature range and long expected life makes it suitable for use in a range of environments, from the smallest of medical instruments to large industrial machines.
