PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear: CS8101YTHA5 Application Field and Working PrincipleVoltage regulators are electronic components utilized in electrically powered appliances and systems to maintain a specific voltage output despite varying input voltage and load conditions. The CS8101YTHA5 is an adjustable precision series Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR) chip by Monolithic Power Systems (MPS). It provides a low noise, extended lifetime, highly accurate solution for dozens of applications, including those in communications, computing, and consumer electronics markets. The CS8101YTHA5 is well suited for applications in which demands vary from low to medium power requirements. Application FieldThe CS8101YTHA5 exhibits excellent transient response and is used for for power supply of application processors and memory as well as multiplexers and audio/video systems. Additional applications include RFID readers, smart energy meters, and hardware security token devices. In each application, the regulator must account for dynamic changes in the source input and load conditions. Low-drop out voltages and the ability to source current contribute to the CS8101YTHA5’s prevalent use in sophisticated electronic products such as servers and data storage solutions.Also, these LVRs can be used in point-of-load regulators, motor drives,industrial,medical, and communications systems. The adjustable and extended output voltage range of this chip, up to 26 volts and in steps of 0.25 V, allows the CS8101YTHA5 to be used throughout a variety of conditions and systems. Working PrincipleThe CS8101YTHA5 is a Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR). The input voltage is compared to the output voltage, and the voltage difference causes a current to flow through the error amplifier. The error amplifier generates an output signal that controls the output voltage of the regulator. This output signal is also sent to the low-side MOSFET, which passes the input voltage to the output, minus the voltage drop across the source of the MOSFET. If the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, the voltage difference is dropped across the MOSFET.The positive voltage is set by the adjustment terminal, ADJ. This terminal is connected to the sliding contact of a potentiometer (the negative terminal of the potentiometer is referenced to the output of the LVR and the center terminal is connected to ground). The voltage at the ADJ terminal is compared with the reference voltage, and if the voltage is too high, the current is sent to the PMOS, supplying the output and reducing the voltage until they match.The compensation component (a resistor and capacitor in series from the output to the ground) establishes a pole-zero combination, which defines the stability of the regulator loop.
