The BIU allows for the transfer of data between the system bus and the Port Handshaking Unit. The PHU is responsible for the handshaking, validating and decoding address and control signals from the system bus, as well as transferring the same data bits to the I/O expansion port. The I/O Expansion Port interfaces bidirectional I/O signals between its associated registers, external devices, or other system buses.
This device is designed to function in an asynchronous mode and employs key types of external control signals. The eight address bus bits, the eight data bus bits, the two interrupt request signals and the two chip enable signals are all allowing the device to facilitate fast data transfers.
