Through Hole Resistors are used to either limiting current, dividing voltage, or providing bias current in either analog or digital circuits. The primary difference between through hole resistors and their surface mount counterparts is that they have a larger body which extends out of the board to which they are attached, enabling them to dissipate more power.
The CW010150R0JS73 is a through hole resistor designed to accomplish these goals. It is designed for economical performance with a power rating of 1 watt and is an excellent choice for applications in which power dissipation is not critical. The physical size makes them suitable for usage in anything from basic analog circuits to some digital applications that require good heat dissipation.
The working principle of a through hole resistor is distinct from that of other types of resistors. It works in a way that limits the flow of electric current and achieve the corresponding electrical resistance value. They are intended for use in PCBs and have a consistent thermal coefficient of resistance. Therefore, the stability of their electrical characteristics is due mostly to their construction, with the main contributing features being the static dielectric strength of the resistor element and the amount of heat it can dissipate.
Use of through hole resistors in normal circuits is accomplished by knowing the expected current level, figuring out the associated voltage, the required power dissipation and the required output impedance which will determine the value and type of resistor. The resistor will then be mounted in the designated spot on the circuit board, and wired up appropriately. As mentioned previously, a through hole resistor has a large body which extends past the board\'s surface allowing for conduction of heat away from the component. As currents pass through the resistor, heat is developed which is then dissipated to the air via convection.
In modern day applications, with ever decreasing circuit sizes and more complicated board designs, surface mounted through hole resistors have become increasingly popular. Although in most situations, using a surface mount resistor is far more cost effective and is more physically compatible with the modern devices requiring a smaller size. There are benefits to using through hole resistors, however, such as the ability to dissipate more heat meaning less reliance on complex cooling systems.
The CW010150R0JS73, with its power rating of 1 watt, is the perfect through hole resistor for economical applications. It is a great component for both analog and digital circuits, with its larger size allowing for good heat dissipation through the top and bottom of the board making for a reliable component. With its consistent thermal coefficient of resistance, the stability of its electrical characteristics ensures it will provide the exact resistance value even with higher currents or changes in temperature.
