The CY2545FCT (Fractional-N PLL) is a family of expandable clock-synthesis chips and is an innovative time-domain clock-synthesis device from Cypress Semiconductor. It uses fractional-N frequency division to provide clock signals at frequencies between 5 MHz and 500 MHz. The CY2545FCT combines the best features of both PLL and divider ICs to reduce parts count, minimize clock design time and effort, and lower costs of board layout and implementation. ApplicationsThe CY2545FCT is primarily designed to help design engineers synthesize any frequency within the allowable range between 5 MHz and 500 MHz. It is used in a variety of clock applications, including cell phone base stations, computing peripherals, digital receivers, server motherboards, and set-top boxes. The device is also used in digital video and broadcast, digital radio broadcast (HD radio), Ethernet and RAID controllers, multimedia test and measurement equipment, satellite radio receivers, and medical imaging. Another application of the device is to generate the clock for a Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) controller, for use in motor drives and power adapters. Working PrincipleThe underlying principle behind the CY2545FCT is the division of time into discrete intervals. This process is called Frequency Division. In a PLL, phase-frequency detectors create the control signal that compensates for the difference between the VCO’s frequency and the reference signal. The resulting output of the phase-frequency detector is used to adjust the voltage on the VCO. The CY2545FCT employs fractional-N frequency division technology to achieve a high degree of frequency accuracy and jitter performance. The device divides the input reference clock signal by an integer or a fractional value, which is determined by the device configuration. The reference frequency is input to the device, and the output frequency is the divider ratio multiplied by the reference frequency. The device has two distinct modes of operation – fractional-N and integer-N, both of which operate in the same way. The fractional-N mode of operation involves a digital loop filter, a digital-to-analog converter, and a loop control circuit within the device. The digital loop filter combines higher-order sigma-delta loops and filters to optimize the jitter performance of the resulting output signal.
