It utilizes an integrated circuit (IC) containing both a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and an output amplifier, which is used to create an output frequency that is several times greater than the fundamental frequency. The VCO generates the fundamental frequency according to the input voltage and is then used to modulate the output frequency. The frequency output is then determined by the capacitor connected to the VCO. The output frequency is generated using three different types of switching (fractional-N, integer-N and interpolation) depending on the desired frequency.
