Clock/Timing – Clock Generators, PLLs, Frequency Synthesizers is a category of integrated circuits (ICs) used to generate highly accurate, stable, and precise timing and frequency signals. At the heart of this technology is the CY7B993V-2AC, which is a high-performance CMOS Clock/Frequency Synthesizer. It provides an ideal solution for multiple applications such as controlling the communications and networking equipment, positioning and navigation systems, data acquisition in industrial process control and medical equipment, as well as being readily used in a variety of other applications.
The CY7B993V-2AC integrates a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to generate a fundamental frequency, which is then converted to eight-division output clocks with any combination of 1/2, 1/4, 1/7, and 1/8 divisions. The clock signal is adjustable over a wide frequency range, enabling to deliver accurate, synchronized signals in different scenarios. It also provides a locking mechanism that prevents any erroneous states that otherwise could be generated by glitches.
The working principle of CY7B993V-2AC is as follows. The input signal is connected to the voltage-controlled oscillator which generates the fundamental frequency signal. This signal is then subject to a phased locked loop (PLL) in order to produce a stable and accurate frequency. The frequency is then divided by the 8 divider, which creates 8 equal time intervals (or frequency divisions). The circuit can be configured to generate8 output clock signals with any combination of 1/2, 1/4, 1/7 and 1/8 frequency divisions.
The PLL in the CY7B993V-2AC incorporates a lock detector circuit that monitors the output frequency. When the frequency gets out of range, the lock will be lost and the clock signal will get de-synchronized. However, the internal lock detector guarantees that only stable locked frequency can be produced by the PLL even when the fundamental frequency gets out of range, or when there is a glitch in the input signal.
In addition to the frequency division, the CY7B993V-2AC features a multiple-channel open-collector drive that is capable of driving multiple load devices, such as LED and active matrix displays. This feature is particularly useful for applications in which the output signals are required to drive multiple load devices, for example, a medical imaging machine that requires precise synchronization between the imaging system and the display.
