The CY8C5867AXI-LP024 is an 8-bit microcontroller from Cypress Semiconductor targeted directly to embedded applications. The chip is designed for reliable operation in many scenarios including industrial controls, automotive and consumer electronics. It offers up to 24KB of on-chip flash memory, a generous 8Kbyte of battery backed RAM and a variety of I/O such as several serial lines and a 16-bit timer. In addition to this, the microcontroller supports up to 21 external interrupt channels, 8 PWM channels and 10 ADCs.

The operating voltage range of the chip is 2.2V to 3.6V depending on the external supply and an internal clock speeds up to 32MHz is offered. The chip itself consists of a core unit and a set of peripherals connected via a flexible bus called FX bus.

The core unit is based on an ARM Cortex M0 CPU offering good processing power and an instruction set known as Thumb-2. In addition to the CPU, the core unit also consists of a flash memory, programmable device for code storage, RAM for data storage, multiple serial I/O channels, timer and other peripherals.

The FX bus, as previously mentioned, is the main gateway for communication between the core unit and the peripherals. The bus consists of 19 physical connections, however only 15 are used for data and signaling. The core and peripheral units can communicate either directly, via interrupt requests, or through a synchronous shared memory.

The peripherals on the chip consists of a programmable logic controller (PLC) which allows complex logical operations to be done in a matter of microseconds, a GPIO module providing 8 digital I/O lines, multiple AltIO modules allowing a very wide range of alternative I/O functions, UART and I2C serial interfaces and a USB interface.
