Working Principle

This current flow is known as the Zener current.

When the reverse voltage increases even more, the Zener current also increases and causes a depletion region on the P-side which allows more current to flow ultimately resulting in a breakdown state. In this way, the Zener diode regulates the voltage in different circuits.
