The D3172MMA7361L is an evaluation board for sensor applications. It is based on a Sense and Control Chips from Freescale. The board integrates a two-axis accelerometer and signal conditioning circuitry, providing an easy-to-use platform for designing a range of applications. The board requires two power supplies: a 3.3V regulated supply for the digital devices and a 3.3V/5V unregulated supply for the analog devices.The MMA7361L accelerometer has three acceleration sensing axes (X, Y, Z) and is one of the most commonly used accelerometers. It is used in dynamic measurements, vibration, crash detection, tilt sensing and many other applications. The MMA7361L contains a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) process accelerometer and a signal processing IC that offers both analog and digital output. It has a range of ± 3.2g, low-voltage operation, low noise, reduced power consumption, and high performance.The signal processing IC provides a wide range of features such as full on-chip auto-zero, low-power mode, power-down mode, temperature compensation, and small size. The board provides regulated and unregulated power for the sensor IC, as well as a voltage divider for adjusting the gain of the circuit.The D3172MMA7361L evaluation board has two features that make it an excellent choice for rapid prototyping: a programmable gain amplifier and a digital filter. The programmable gain amplifier allows the user to easily adjust the gain of the circuit from 100mV/g to 2V/g, depending on the range of the accelerometer used. The digital filter allows the elimination of the high-frequency noise from the analog output of the accelerometer, thus providing a highly precise output signal.The working principle of the D3172MMA7361L is relatively simple. When an acceleration is applied to any of the three sensing axes, the MEMS accelerometer generates a small electrical signal, which is amplified by the signal conditioning circuitry and then amplified and filtered through the programmable gain amplifier and digital filter. The output is then sent to either an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), where it can be analyzed by digital signal processing algorithms, or directly to a microcontroller to produce an output signal.The D3172MMA7361L evaluation board is perfect for a variety of applications, including motion sensing, vibration analysis, electronic packaging design, and consumer electronics. It provides an easy to use platform for quickly prototyping a wide range of accelerometer-based applications. With its programmable gain amplifier and digital filter, the board ensures a high precision output signal and can be used to measure a range of acceleration from 0 to ± 3.2g.
