Snap action, limit switches, such as the D4MC-2020, are electromechanical devices employed for the detection of physical position in an automated system. Its working principle lies on the basic fact that electricity could activate a mechanical device: when an external force triggers the mechanism, a set of contacts closes or opens, thus allowing the windings to be energized or de-energized.
The device essentially consists of a spring-loaded button, referred to as actuator, or a reed switch, that has several electrical contacts on a printed circuit board. The role of the actuator is to start the switch when a certain force, typically generated by the physical arrangement of the system, is applied. Normally, the contacts are initially opened by the spring-loaded stopping mechanism when no force is applied.
The force required for the actuator to make contact is usually adjustable, thus allowing for different levels of sensitivity in the trigger event. Depending on the manufacturer, the D4MC-2020 can be configured with either a latching or non-latching actuator. A latching mechanism will remain in the same state after the trigger force has been applied, while a non-latching actuator will resume to its initial position after a short delay.
The contacts on the printed circuit board are normally separated into two distinct groups: normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC). When the actuator is triggered, it will cause the NO contacts to close and the NC contacts to open, and vice versa. This allows for the adjustment of the contact state (i.e. whether the contacts are opened or closed) by simply turning the actuator. This is especially useful in applications where user input to trigger an electrical circuit is necessary.
Aside from its sensing feature, the D4MC-2020 can also be used as an input switch in electronic circuits. In this configuration, an applied trigger force activates the contacts, thus allowing current to flow through the D4MC-2020, thus effectively forming an electric circuit. This feature is useful in applications where a signal received from a remote source is required to activate a device.
Aside from a wide range of structural customization options, the D4MC-2020 is also one of the most reliable switches available on the market. It boasts a mechanical life of several million iterations, allowing it to endure long-term duty cycles and extended periods of operation. Its dust and water tight construction also makes it a great pick for applications in harsh environments.
Due to the aforementioned features, the D4MC-2020 is highly popular in a variety of automated systems. It finds its recurrent use in motor control loops, industrial robotics, and medical automation, as it allows for reliable detection with reliable levels of safety. Its ability to detect physical motion and adjust contact states, as well as providing a switch for external inputs makes it an invaluable asset in the realm of automated machinery.
