The DC1319A-B is a part of the family of evaluation boards designed by On Semiconductor for LED drivers. It is a programmable current driver for multiple LEDs, with a range of 500mA – 600mA and up to 6 channels of illumination. The board is backed up by On Semiconductor’s smart-DCDC driver, which is a unique power control IC. The DC1319A-B evaluation board is built using the latest small board technology to provide a low cost, small form factor solution to LED driver requirements.
The main application of the DC1319A-B is for powering up multiple white LEDs for a consistent light source in applications such as automotive lighting, industrial lighting, projection lamps, and white LED pixels. The device can also be used in digital signage and RGB color-illumination applications.
The programmable current driver features high efficiency, low inductance and high-speed switching. It provides both pulse-width modulated (PWM) and analog-controlled digital dimming modes. When used in PWM dimming mode, the board has a typical range of 25 kHz – 200 kHz switching frequency and a minimum 10-bit resolution. Digital dimming also allows for up to 8-bit resolutions with a dimming range of 2% – 100%.
The circuit is based on an advanced high speed smart-DCDC driver, the NCP1397, which is extremely reliable with maximum output currents up to 600mA per channel. A built-in Adaptive Temperature Derating (ATD) system provides thermal protection for the LED lighting system by reducing the output current when ambient temperatures exceed safe values. This enables the device to provide consistent performance and improved lifetime.
The DC1319A-B includes a low voltage regulated voltage source, allowing it to drive several series connected LEDs directly from a single DC power supply and avoiding the need for separate switching regulators or level shifters. The board also features current output regulation, allowing it to be used in applications which require a constant LED current over a range of temperatures and operating voltages. Additional features include low EMI, enhanced power factor correction, LED fault protection and robust short-circuit protection.
The output current of the Smart-DCDC driver can be programmed either manually or through digital I2C communication. Manually setting up the output current is simple and can be done by connecting the input pins of the board to the +5 V power supply voltage and adjusting the potentiometer connected to the board. Alternatively, the I2C bus can be used to program the current output up to 8-bit resolution.
In order to provide flexibility, the DC1319A-B can be configured for 1-6 channels of illumination with three adjustable current ranges. The device also includes built-in over-temperature protection which shuts down the outputs of the driver in abnormal situations. Furthermore, it has a PWM control output connection, enabling easy system integration.
The DC1319A-B evaluation board is a reliable and cost-effective solution to LED driver applications. It includes simple current setup and many features/functions all packed into a small board form factor. With its multiple adjustable output current and dimming modes, this board can be used for a variety of LED applications.
