DC1379B is a high-performance evaluation board developed by Fairchild, designed for evaluating the performance of off-line switching power supplies. The board is type-tested and provides an excellent solution for measuring the performance of the product and prototyping applications. This evaluation board is ideal for controlling the switching mode AC or DC power supply and is suitable for testing flyback regulators and other off-line power applications.

The functional block diagram for the DC1379B is quite simple and easy to understand. Its design integrates several functions together, such as the power supply sensing function, gate driver, power supply outputs, oscillator, converter and reference. The power supply sensing circuit senses the primary line voltage and also maintains the output voltage stable, supplying power to different outputs. Additionally, it serves to regenerate power resulting in very little heat dissipation. The reference allows voltage or current to be compared with a fixed reference level. The oscillator generates a signal which switches on and off the power MOSFETs. Without the oscillator frequency, the output converter would not be able to operate properly.

The evaluation board typically runs off an external power source. The DC1379B evaluation board inputs a line voltage ranging from 85 to 265V AC, and converts it to 12 or 24V DC depending on the output selection. By turning the rotary switch, it is possible to adjust the output voltage range to 0 to 5V, 0 to 10V, and 0 to 15V. The sensitivity of the power supply sensing is adjustable and can even be set to trip off the level when a fault occurs. Apart from the rotary switch, there are several short-cut buttons that allow the user to choose between different operating conditions.

The evaluation board typically has four sections – the rectifier, a low-cost integrated power supply (IPS), an external power supply (EPS), and an oscillator. The rectifier accepts the AC input voltage and converts it to DC. The IPS section provides the on/off control for the desired output voltage. It consists of a controller along with the necessary circuitry. The EPS section is used to control the output voltage by means of a simple voltage control circuit. The oscillator section generates a switching signal which controls the on/off operation of the power MOSFETs.

The DC1379B evaluation board provides a great platform for testing and developing switching mode power systems. It enables users to test the performance of off-line switching power supplies and their ability to meet specific application requirements. It also allows designers to adjust the output voltage and conduct wide range experiments. Furthermore, the DC1379B board is highly stable and reliable, making it suitable for long-term applications.
