DC1921A is an evaluation board designed to evaluate DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS). The board implements a full-bridge LLC topology, where a two-switch full-bridge network and a series inductor form the power stage. The board can operate in either continuous-conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous-conduction mode (DCM), and includes a wide range of protection features such as over-voltage, under-voltage and over-current protection. The board also provides the capability to measure efficiency, power, harmonic content, safety and performance of the SMPS.
The DC1921A has several applications, including powering of DSPs and microcontrollers, powering of motor controllers, supplying power to automotive and consumer electronics. It is also used for prototyping, testing, and evaluating the efficiency and performance of a variety of applications. With the board’s high flexibility, designers can experiment with different configuration and use the board to develop new innovative applications.
The DC1921A board features a multi-stage LLC converter using two high-voltage insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), one low-voltage n-channel MOSFET, and one synchronous rectifier MOSFET. The board is designed to generate a regulated DC voltage from an unregulated AC or DC input. It has zero-voltage switching (ZVS) capability and can achieve frequency up to 500kHz.
The key components of the DC1921A include the two IGBTs, the two MOSFETs, the DC/DC LLC circuit, the capacitive snubbers, the inductor and the power diode. The LLC circuit comprises of two separate high-voltage IGBTs, one low-voltage MOSFET, one synchronous rectifier MOSFET, and a half-bridge consisting of two IGBTs. The inductor is used for energy storage and current limiting, and the power diode is used as a freewheeling diode to provide DC output voltage. Depending on the operating conditions and the desired output voltage, the board can operate in either CCM or DCM. The LLC circuit also contains a mid-point capacitor to maintain balanced voltage operation. The capacitive snubbers protect the switching devices from high-frequency switching noise, while the synchronous rectifier MOSFET provides a high efficiency.
The other key components of the DC1921A are the pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller and the control circuitry. The PWM controller, which consists of a voltage feedback loop and a current feedback loop, is responsible for controlling the switching frequency and duty cycle of the bridge transistors and the overall operation of the LLC circuit. The control circuitry, consisting of multiple voltage regulators, provides voltage regulation, soft-start, current limiting, over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection. The PWM controller also has adjustable parameters which can be used to perform a variety of tests on the LLC converter.
With the DC1921A, engineers and designers have the capability to evaluate the power, efficiency, harmonic content, and safety characteristics of their SMPS designs. It can also be used to prototype, test, and develop innovative new applications. The board is highly flexible and can be used for a wide range of applications. It is therefore an ideal evaluation board for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS.
