The DC878A is an application-specific evaluation board that features a high power offline switch-mode power supply (SMPS) for DC/DC and AC/DC use. The board is suitable for a wide range of applications in a variety of industries such as industrial automation, robotics, automotive, lighting and home appliance. The DC878A can be used for powering low-voltage or medium-voltage control systems, and also for consumer applications such as consumer appliances, communications and gaming products.The DC878A’s operating principle is based on a flyback topology, where the primary side of the power supply is powered by a full-wave bridge rectifier. The output voltage is regulated via a closed-loop, or open-loop, approach. On the secondary side, the rectified AC voltage is converted to DC voltage through the use of a rectifier diode network. The output voltage can be adjusted via a voltage feedback loop.The DC878A is a highly efficient, cost effective and compact device, suitable for replacing traditional transformer-based solutions in off-line SMPS applications. The board contains a number of components that are key to the operation of the power supply, including a rectifier bridge, a primary switch (FET or MOSFET), a current sense transistor, an auxiliary transistor, a transformer, an inductor, a control IC, and various capacitors and resistors. All components are connected in a certain manner in order to guarantee a high efficiency performance and a safe operation.The DC878A offers a variety of features that contribute to its reliability and performance.
