Working Principle

A Zener diode works based on the principle of breakdown voltage. Once the voltage across the diode reaches its breakdown voltage, the electric charges within the junction layer will become so concentrated that the field between the two layers becomes unstable, and current begins to flow.

This current flow is then limited by a depletion layer, which works by creating a dead zone around the PN junction region. This prevents excessive current flowing through the diode and makes sure that the diode does not burn out. This is why Zener diodes are such popular devices, since they are able to regulate current with a high degree of accuracy and stability.
