D-Sub connectors are a type of electrical connectors which are commonly used in the computing and telecommunications industries. The ‘D’ in D-Sub stands for ‘D-shaped’ due to the distinctive shape of its connectors. The connectors come in different sizes ranging from 2 up to 37-pin variants which correspond to the number of pins the connector has.
Within the D-Sub range, there is the DB-9RS connector, also known as a serial connector. It features 9 pins, with each one corresponding to a specific signal type. These signals are as follows:
- Transmit Data (TXD)
- Receive Data (RXD)
- Data Terminal Ready (DTR)
- Request To Send (RTS)
- Clear To Send (CTS)
- Data Carrier Detect (DCD)
- Data Set Ready (DSR)
- Speed Data Set Ready (SRD)
- Ground
DB-9RS connectors typically come in two types - male and female. The male has the pins protruding from it, while the female has the holes. Signals are sent using the transmitter at the male connector end, and received using the receiver at the female connector end. The male DB-9RS connector is usually found on the external side of a computer, typically connected to the COM port within the PC. The female connector is found on the other device which is connected to the computer such as a serial-compatible modem or a printer.
The DB-9RS is an invaluable tool used by many machines for different purposes. It is mainly used for serial communication between two devices, and is especially commonly used as a connection between a computer and a modem. It is also often used as a connection between a computer and a switch box, as well as a connection between two computers using a null modem cable. It has also been increasingly used as an interface in power electronics due to its reliable communication.
The DB-9RS connector works by having pins in the male connector connecting with the holes on the female connector. The most common pinout for the DB-9RS connector follows the RS232 protocol which is used by many computers as its standard serial communication.
When the pins on the male connector make contact with the holes on the female connector, the connection is made, and each of the pins has an assigned dedicated purpose. For each signal type, the appropriate voltage level is sent and received using the correct voltage. This ensures reliable data transmission between two devices.
The DB-9RS connector is a very reliable and widely-used connection type. Its simple pinout and dedicated signal purpose makes it an ideal candidate for many communication options. From computers to power electronics, the DB-9RS connector is used across many industries for many different purposes.
